Mike Archer

“My name is Mike Archer. I live in Port Colborne with my wife. I have 3 daughters. I have been a member here for over 20 years. When I first joined the gym it had no name. I suggested Gino and Mikes Gym. Gino liked it but shortened it up a bit. Sorry Matt! We have been very lucky to have Gino Spada stick with it for so many years, giving us all a place to workout. I guess if he didn’t own the gym he may have needed to get a real job. We in Port Colborne do not have many things, but what we do have are gems. The gym is a gem. In a couple of weeks I will be turning 56 years old. I do not physically feel any different then I did when I was 35. I can still participate in any sport I want. Unlike many of my friends I do not have a pill box. Thank you G&M Fitness for that.
45 minutes, 3 times a week is worth every day now.”

“I joined G&M Fitness 6 months ago after realizing it was time for a lifestyle change. As a sign of my commitment I decided to sign up for a year membership. I bought Gino’s book – S.O.S and started to change my diet. Things were going well – no one was more surprised than me to be going to the gym on Christmas Day and even New Years Day. I was proud of having a perfect attendance record. Thanks to G&M for your 24 hour access – it means there is no excuse.
On Friday, February 13th I fell and broke my right shoulder and completely tore the rotator cuff. Still determined, I stopped working out but continued a cardio program running on the elliptical machine with my arm in a sling. That’s when I realized what a community it is here at G&M. People had always been friendly before, but I really appreciated their thoughtfulness in asking me regularly about my recovery. I did have to take 23 days off after my surgery (there goes the perfect attendance record) but as soon as the staples came out, I was back.
With advice from my surgeon and my physiotherapist I started on a program that included cable machines and light weights. Gino approached me one day and showed me some exercises to specifically target my rotator cuff muscles. Throughout my recovery, my physiotherapist has been very impressed with my progress and I credit that to my changed lifestyle which started here at G&M Fitness 6 months ago.
To date I have lost 60 pounds – while I feel a lot better and far more fit and flexible – my lifestyle journey has just begun.“

“I grew up in Welland. At the age of 16, I began working out. My mom would drop me off at the gym in the early evenings and pick me up at 9, until I began to drive myself. At first, I felt uncomfortable because I was intimidated by a lot of the people that were much bigger than me, but I got past that as time went on. I enjoyed how lifting weights and doing cardio made me feel. I learned a lot over the years from many people, along with reading and trying new things on my own.

In 2000, I got married and my wife and I moved to Port Colborne. I needed to find a gym that would carry on what I had done since I was 16. I found G and M Fitness and haven’t looked back. I have made many friends since joining, some of them becoming very close friends.

I enjoy working out for an hour, 5 days a week during my lunch hour. I have no excuse not to go. Some days I feel like many that just don’t feel like it, but once I’m finished and go back to work, I feel fantastic!

I want to say thank you to Gino, Matt and their staff, for providing a facility that is not only convenient for me, but has everything that is needed to have a great workout. I appreciate the advice and help over the years. I look forward continuing the journey that started over 24 years ago for me.”

“I joined G&M Fitness in December 2004 along with 3 other women when Gino had run a membership special and we all thought the exercise would be good for us. They didn’t stay but I did. It’s eleven years later and I love and enjoy G&M Fitness. Gino showed us how to use the machines and set us up on a program. I still do most of them plus others as there has been a lot of new equipment added. I started out by going 3 days a week for one hour, now I go 5 days a week and I feel great. I start my day off with a few laughs and chit chat with all the friends I have made here. Exercise has helped me stay in good shape to continue to doing my own chores around my home. Thank you Gino and Matt.”

“Six years ago I moved to Port Colborne to share my life with Edd. One of my many questions for him was, “is there a decent gym to do my workouts“. He gave me a big smile as he was excited that I would be joining him at the gym and told me about G & M Fitness. He said “not only is it a great gym but it is filled with great people”. Edd was true to his word. Working out is an important part of my life because of its health benefits to both body and mind. Due to an accident at a young age I developed traumatic arthritis. Exercise helps to maintain strength in my leg and ensures that I continue to be mobile. Working out takes care of the body. It is the members at G&M Fitness that take care of the mind. It is wonderful to see how well everyone gets along with each other, they have great chats, sharing stories and laughter. The members truly are a caring group and support each other through the good times and the sad times. Gino, Matt and the rest of the staff have always been there and willing to give advice and help. Thank you for gathering members together for the Christmas Dinner and the Summer Barbeques. Eddie, thanks for introducing me to the gym and giving me so many wonderful and good friends.”

“I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle by working out 3-5 times a week and making smart choices with what kind of food I put into my body. I knew when I became pregnant that it was even more important for me, and especially the baby, that I keep up with these practices. Right away Matt put me on a modified work out that was safe for me to do. Unfortunately due to some complications, the doctor said I had to stop weight training and vigorous cardio. I was in a lot of pain and knew my body needed movement so I turned to prenatal yoga and walking, which really helped my restless legs, and I continued throughout my pregnancy. Now three months later I’m working on shedding the baby weight (21lbs so far from 30 gained), which although is taking some effort, is a lot easier since I was in shape before I got pregnant. I can’t wait to get back into G&M and see everyone that I have been missing the past few months, and Sloan can work the front desk!”

“I first joined G&M Fitness in my last year of high school in 1993/1994 when it was above Canadian Tire in Port Colborne. I was always very active all my life but I never truly felt like I was in shape. I became very interested in joining a gym and toning up with light weight lifting and vigorous cardio. I kept hearing that G&M Fitness was the place to go. I became a member and started working out and training with Gino and his staff. The atmosphere was really motivating and I felt very comfortable amongst the members right away. Gino was extremely helpful and streamlined a program for me where I seemed to get results almost immediately. I began to feel energized and I started working out 5-7 days a week for an hour to an hour and a half a day. I felt better about myself and soon developed more self confidence. I looked so forward to my daily workouts and found it to be a very enjoyable, social experience as well as physical. New friendships developed in my life as well. Years later when I was pregnant with my daughter Katie, I continued to work out pretty much until right before she was born. Gino assisted with my routine at that point and worked with me on different cardio activities and light weights that were suitable for that time. Gino and Matt have both been extremely supportive throughout the years. I had to have surgery back in September/2015 and with the help of Gino and Matt I was back to the gym on a modified exercise program three days after the surgery. I truly feel that their assistance and knowledge helped me recover more quickly. My doctor was astonished at how fast I bounced back to normal activity.

This is my 22nd year as a proud member of G&M Fitness. I feel I am in top physical condition and I know that Gino, Matt and his staff have helped me to achieve this goal and for this they certainly deserve my utmost gratitude and thanks. For anyone who wants to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and general well-being, I would HIGHLY recommend joining G&M Fitness in Port Colborne.”

Clyde Sherk & Loma Doan

“It’s been twenty two years since Loma and brother Clyde walked into our club and joined us, and they are still going strong at 90 (Clyde) and 86 (Loma). They’ve joined us every winter since then and enjoy the summer months outdoors, biking and walking. We couldn’t be more proud to have them as our Members of the Month for April of 2016. Both siblings have had hip replacements with no issues and Clyde has gone through a triple bypass doing his post surgery rehabilitation with us at our club. They’ve both read the “Eat Smart, Eat Often, Eat Small” book authored by owner Gino Spada and try to incorporate those principles of eating whenever they can. Congratulations Clyde and Loma for being one of the best examples of why we do what we do. “One of the attractions to G&M Fitness is, of course, the owners, Gino and Matt. Their attention to detail, their willing response to the individual member’s needs, and their love of what they are doing, make them who they are: topflight. We believe that our regular use of their well-equipped facility helps in our old age to keep us somewhat agile and supple and keeps us going. Of course, we must also thank the Good Lord for His part in this!! Beyond all this, it is the satisfaction that we have in knowing that a portion of our membership fees are given to support needy children in countries not as blessed as we are. Well done.”

“I have been associated with the G&M family for years. Gino and Matt are the owners of the gym. I also used to do aerobics with the M(Maria) because we used to do aerobics with the teacher (Vince Pascuzzi and his wife Diane). One day Vince asked Maria and myself if we could teach a class, because he wasn’t going to be there, and so we did and had fun doing it for him. The years have passed and I hardly ever see her, but when I do see her we have a nice chat together. My life here at G&M has been slow but steady until just these past few months it finally hit me. I have finally came and conquered the bridge which has always not let me cross over. Gino and Matt are extremely helpful when they are asked anything to about what to do at the gym. I’ll have total confidence in both of them forever. Real friendships aren’t forged over night and over the years and at this point in my life I truly feel part of the G&M family and friends. Thank you and see you soon!”

“After nearly 2 years away from the gym, I rejoined in January 2015. Previous to that, I had been an on and off member and even worked here!

In 2011, I went back to nursing school and gained the dreaded “freshman 15.” Going to school full time and working part time as a PSW during those 2 years left me with no time and no ambition to do anything. Even after I graduated in 2013 and started my new career as an RPN, I continued to neglect myself, yo-yo dieting and no regular exercise.
I decided in December 2014 that I needed to get my act together so my husband renewed my membership for Christmas. My goal was to lose 15lbs and tone up. It was a lot of hard work, sometimes 2 steps forward and 1 back but by December 2015 I reached my goal weight. When I plateaued during that time I downloaded Gino’s book Eat Smart, Eat Often, Eat Small and followed the guidelines for eating and exercising and that really set me on my way. I also had an accountability buddy (thanks Meg!) to help me stay on track.

This October I turn 50 and my goal is to do an unassisted pull-up. I have started lifting heavier and recently gained 4lbs in muscle. Lifting weights is my favourite and I really don’t like to do cardio. If I have any questions, Matt and Gino are always available to answer my questions and show me proper technique.
I love the diverse group of members at G&M, especially all the seniors. Working in long term care and seeing seniors in poor health everyday, it is very refreshing to see ones who are taking their health into their own hands and working out. Thanks to Gino and Matt for making G&M such an awesome gym to be a part of.”
