As mentioned on the strength training page, there are many different ways to increase strength. The use of the strength training machines is one way, and another is the use of free weights. Essentially, the difference is that with free weights, there is more muscle activation involved, simply because when using free weights, you are required, in most cases to balance the weights as you are performing the movements. Co-ordination becomes a factor in controlling the movements so that they are done not only effectively, but safely.
At G&M Fitness, we seldom start a beginner with free weight training unless it is specifically requested.
We prescribe free weight training to most of our clients only after they have become stronger with the use of the machines, and have reached a point where a more challenging workout is required to continue to see results.
We recommend booking an appointment with one of our personal trainers to design a strength training program using free weights for you and teach you how to do the exercises safely and effectively.
