Lifespan vs. Healthspan

We as humans are living longer and longer with advances in healthcare, medications and technology, but are we really “living” through these extra years?
Lifespan measures the number of years you live but healthspan measures the number of years you remain healthy and capable.
Our mission here at G&M Fitness is to help members live a superior quality of life. It’s written on the wall behind the cardio machines for everyone to see.
To us that is the entire purpose of exercise and working out. It is to keep us in shape to be able to do the things we want in life, for as long as possible.
We have had members in their 90’s who still golfed, travelled and lived independently. Those are the inspiring stories that really hit home for me.
What good is it to live an extra 10 years with no quality of life, just letting time pass by?
I don’t know of anything more powerful than staying active through exercise and specifically strength training, that can add quality years on to our lives.
No medication can do that for you. That is not to say that the advances in medications don’t have their place. They absolutely do. But think of how much more powerful they would be if on top of what they are doing for you, you are strong and able bodied. You could do anything you wanted to, well into your 80’s and 90’s. We know it’s true because we have seen it first hand many times here with our members.
The sooner you start the better, but you can still accomplish adding quality of life through exercise at any age. We know this from seeing it first hand as well.
Something to think about. Do you want to just increase your lifespan or would you rather increase your healthspan?
Two to three hours a week is all it takes. A small investment that has exponentially larger returns down the road.
If you need help getting started, we are here for you! If you are already doing it, keep it up! Your future self will thank you!
