40 Tips from 40 Years – Part 1: Starting Right

For 40 years, we’ve seen thousands of people walk through our doors, some just getting started, some starting over, and some finally getting serious.
The biggest difference between those who succeed and those who don’t?
It’s not talent. It’s not age. It’s not even motivation.
It’s how they start.
Here are the first 10 lessons we’ve learned over the last 40 years.
Tip #1: Don’t try to “make up for lost time”
The fastest way to burn out is going all in too quickly. Start with a pace you can actually sustain.
Tip #2: Consistency beats intensity (every time)
One great workout doesn’t change anything. Showing up 2–3 times every week does.
Tip #3: Learn proper form early
We’ve seen it for decades, bad habits stick. Good coaching early on saves months (or years) later.
Tip #4: You don’t need to feel destroyed to see progress
Soreness isn’t the goal, progress is. Train hard, but train smart.
Tip #5: Start with a simple plan
The people who succeed aren’t doing everything, they’re doing a few things consistently well.
Tip #6: Track something
Workouts, weights, attendance, anything. What gets tracked improves.
Tip #7: Don’t compare your Day 1 to someone else’s Year 5
Everyone you see doing well started exactly where you are.
Tip #8: Ask for help sooner than you think
The most successful members aren’t the ones who figure it out alone as they go, they’re the ones who ask.
Tip #9: Schedule your workouts like appointments
If it’s optional, it’s easy to skip. Put it in your calendar and treat it like any other appointment you wouldn’t miss.
Tip #10: Focus on building the habit, not chasing results
Results come because of the habit, not the other way around.
